How to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce established the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It has 2,711 stars embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents someone who made motion pictures, television or radio, as well as music and other aspects of popular culture. The HWOF currently has 1,922 listed living people.

To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, a certificate will be sent to you stating that you are eligible. This includes your name as well as date of birth and the city where you live. A bronze plaque with your name inscribed on it is also included. This plaque is attached directly to the concrete base, in front of designated stars.

A current HWOF member can nominate you for a star or if you have made significant contributions in movies, television or radio. A committee reviews all the nominations before deciding whether or not they are approved. If they do so, they send a message to the applicant's address explaining their decision. A second letter confirms acceptance if the nominee accepts the nomination. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce charges $25, and then the money is sent to the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angles.

The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs takes the other half.

Once the artist receives his/her star he/she will be eligible to be inducted into the HWOF. To be eligible to list on the HWOF you will need to pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce all outstanding balance. The amount due depends on how many years ago you were first nominated. If you were first nominated for a nomination in 1990, your owe $15,000. You'd owe $10,000 if you were previously nominated in 1990.

If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.

How old must one be to get a HWOF star

When nominated, one must have at least 18-years-old. A person must be present at the time of receiving a star. After receiving a stars, one could still be nominated after ten more years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Family members may nominate you to be a star. If there are no living relatives, then the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place a memorial marker in front of the star.

Why don't people just use a different street instead of having stars all over the place?

The HWOF doesn't intend to be historical monument. It is meant as a memorial to all who contributed to the history of film.
